The benefits of Yoga

After spending another amazing week working with the Power Yoga students at the Byron Bay retreat, I really noticed the benefits of a strong Yoga practice with many of the students. Yoga really is essential to balance the body after our daily repetitive working actions, whether that being sitting in front of a computer or bending with our lower back and knees in a labour intensive job. Yoga truly enhances our bodies and way of life.

Other benefits include:

*Flexibility: Yoga postures (asanas) are one of the best types of exercises you can do to improve flexibility by creating increased range of motions in our joints. Flexibility is essential for avoiding injuries as well as for the health of the joints, tendons and muscles.

*Improved posture: Correct alignment is important in the various poses. In addition raising the awareness of posture, yoga strengthens the various muscles and ligaments to enable a better posture.

*Improved joint function: The gentle exercise of muscles and ligaments keeps joints flexible and moving freely.

*Better breathing: it will teach us how to breath correctly, internally working our organs and allowing out thoracic spine to work correctly.

*Energy: Yoga exercises, breath control training (pranayama) and use of yoga body locks (bandhas) all work to activate and balance your energy pathways, giving you the vitality and power you need to maximize your potential.

*Healing: The power of Yoga to heal ailments and cure diseases is becoming more and more an integral part of mainstream medical practice and treatment methods. This ability of Yoga to heal also promotes longevity.

 

Try and make time 2-3 times a week to do a Yoga class and see the benefits it has for all of us.
